We have been supporting rural areas with agricultural and livestock projects since 2005. We launched the distribution of laying hens primarily due to a lack of safe alternatives for supporting women in view of the political situation. The keeping of chickens is in line with the strict political rules – unfortunately, the training of women in skilled trades is currently not.

New prospects for Samira

Samira lives alone with her 4 children in the village of Nejrab after her husband left her for a new wife. In order to improve her situation in the long term, it was decided to provide her with laying hens and a chicken starter pack. As her house and land are ideal for keeping chickens, Samira was given 60 laying hens instead of the usual 20.

It was not easy to find good, healthy laying hens at the current time, but our sister association ALS managed to buy 60 healthy, young hens at a good price and transport them to their new residence. Besides Samira, her four children were particularly happy about the new arrivals. The first step towards economic independence has been taken.

Features

The chicken project allows Samira to look after her children at home, take care of the household and keep an eye on the chickens at the same time. She can either use the eggs to feed the family herself, sell them at the market or raise chicks. Later, Samira can sell chickens and thus earn part of the family income herself. For a single woman in today’s Afghanistan, this is otherwise hardly feasible.
