Ten-year-old Abdul Qahar is a friendly and quiet boy who has had to face life’s hardships from a young age. The Kunar earthquake took his father’s life. Left behind were his mother, his older sister (12), and the youngest of the family, Khalida (2).

Abdul Qahar’s home village, Shin Konarak, is very remote, so life there is marked by hardship. Women are not allowed to work outside their own homes. As a result, Abdul Qahar’s mother has to go to extraordinary lengths to provide food for the family every day, which, unfortunately, doesn’t always work out.

Abdul Qahar therefore pins all his hopes for a better future on his education. He is in first grade at a school far away. Despite his worn-out shoes and the hardships of the journey, he makes the trip to school with a light heart and full of confidence. He firmly believes that education can change his destiny.

Abdul Qahar’s story reflects the lives of thousands of children in this country—children who, despite their hardships, continue to believe in a better tomorrow. We cannot help everyone, but we would like to support Abdul Qahar through a monthly sponsorship.
