Nazifa is the mother of six children—four sons and two daughters. Three years ago, her husband fell seriously ill with heart disease. The family’s already meager income was barely enough to live on, so Nazifa had to borrow money to pay for his treatment. Despite all her efforts, her husband died, leaving her as the sole breadwinner for the family.
Since then, they have been living in their brother-in-law’s house. Nazifa works as a cleaner in private households. Her daily wage is very low, and she often finds herself without work. Nevertheless, she does everything she can to enable her children to attend school — because education is their only chance for a better future.
The hardship is particularly acute in winter: the family has no financial means to stock up on fuel or supplies. The freezing months in Afghanistan can be life-threatening.
Nazifa is very concerned about how to get her children safely through this period. Life is hard and full of challenges — but not without hope.
