Despite the largely stable political situation in the country, the economic situation remains disastrous. Even in the capital, there are frequent interruptions to the power supply. In order to guarantee our employees in Kabul a more reliable supply, we are planning to purchase and install a solar system including storage for the ALS building. The building is one of the few places where the women can still meet in privacy. There they can share their worries and needs and give each other advice instead of being chained to their own homes alone. In addition to its purely practical, economic significance, this place also has an important social function.

We have received an initial cost estimate for the installation from a specialist company:

We hope for numerous donations so that the ALS employees in Kabul can continue their important work for Afghanistan’s women and families.

Background

Afghanistan has abundant natural resources, including solar energy, water, and wind. In total, the country could generate 23 gigawatts (GW) from hydropower, 67 GW from wind power and a staggering 220 GW from solar energy. With these resources, Afghanistan has the potential not only to meet its own energy needs, but also to export surplus energy to other South Asian countries.

Furthermore, solar energy accounts for more than two thirds of Afghanistan’s total renewable energy potential of over 300,000 megawatts (MW). With around three hundred days of sunshine a year, Afghanistan is well positioned to harness solar energy. Afghanistan’s solar energy potential is comparable to that of four sunbelt states in the United States.

Investing in renewable energy can improve the country’s energy independence and significantly boost industry and trade.
